is the invoice ContactNumber field specific to each api application?

if i have several external app's accessing xero via the api, does each application only get to see what it has put into the ContactNumber field, or can each application see the 1 shared value, and potentially override what one of the other external apps has set?
@Alex - yes the ContactNumber is available for any app to see. i.e. there is only one ContactNumber per contact. In addition to this is the ContactID which is generated by Xero.
